This quote from the poem "Song of the Reed" relates to my life in many ways. After a long winter break I can honestly say I was longing to return to campus. I missed the freedom, my friends, late night adventures, and even learning. Like the saying goes, "You don't know what you've got until it's gone." I didn't realize how much I loved being at UT and all of the amazing things that come with it. After just one semester I can truly say that UT is know a huge part of my life that means a great deal to me. Being pulled away from UT even just for a month had me longing to return.
On the other hand, this quote also reminds me of being away from home. San Antonio has been my home for the past 19 years. It is the only place I have lived and will always have a special place in my heart. Being away from home has allowed me to appreciate the little things about it. Although San Antonio is a major city, it really doesn't feel that way. Things move pretty slow and everyone pretty much keeps to themselves. I can appreciate that now, because Austin is such a fast-moving place. I also miss my parents daily while I'm away. They are a huge source that I am pulled away from and I love when I get to see them again.
"Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent from a guide beyond." (232)
This line from the poem "The Guest House" says a lot about how we should treat each other regardless of status, gender, or race. Everyone who comes in our life is for a reason and a purpose. Although they might not seem significant, God's plans are always much bigger than ours. You could be the light that person needs, because they are going through a difficult time. Sometimes all it takes is a simple smile or a hello can make a difference in a person's day. Being at UT I have met so many wonderful people all with different perspectives and backgrounds. Everyone's stories are so unique and you never truly know what someone is going through when you see them around on campus. One of my goals this semester will be to make a point to smile at people I don't know and be open to meeting new people.
